celebrating shinhwa, the six crystals (aka the longest-running K-pop group in history!)
“We are Shinhwa!”
And they mean it. For over 27 years, Eric, Min-woo, Dong-wan, Hye-sung, Jun Jin, and Andy have stuck together through legal battles, company changes, military service, and shifting industry trends. They proved that a group could own their name, their music, and their future. These six men created their own myth.>:]
General info
Debut: March 24, 1998 Company: SM Entertainment (originally), then Shinhwa Company (self-managed since 2011) Fan Club: Shinhwa Changjo (신화창조). It means "Creating Myths," which is incredibly fitting for a group that has made history for decades! Fan Color: Orange. The "orange ocean" is famous and a badge of honor for the dedicated Shinhwa Changjo fandom! 🧡
the six OG members
Shinhwa (신화) means "myth" or "legend" in Korean, a name they have truly lived up to! They are famous for maintaining their six-member lineup without any changes or departures.
Eric Mun
Our legendary leader, main rapper, and a talented actor! As the primary English speaker, he often handled international press early on. He's known for his deep voice, intense stage presence, and later, his success in acting roles (like Phoenix and Another Miss Oh). He was crucial in forming Shinhwa Company to keep the group together.
Lee Min-woo
The main dancer, lead vocalist, and visual! Known for his charisma and stage presence, he also had a successful solo career as "M." He's a creative force and has been involved in choreographing and producing music for the group.
Kim Dong-wan
The lead vocalist and a versatile performer! Known for his powerful and emotional vocals, he's also a respected actor in musicals and dramas. He often acts as the "voice of reason" within the group and is known for his witty humor.
Shin Hye-sung
The main vocalist with a distinctive, clear voice! Known as the "ballad prince," his smooth singing style has always been a key part of Shinhwa's sound. He also had a very successful solo career and was part of the project group S with Lee Ji-hoon and Kangta (from H.O.T., a fun fact!).
Jun Jin
The lead rapper, lead dancer, and vocalist! His name means "advance" or "move forward," which fits his energetic persona perfectly. He's a powerful performer and also gained fame on various variety shows, showing off his energetic and sometimes clumsy charm.
Andy Lee
The youngest member (maknae), main rapper, and a vocalist! Known for his charming smile and various talents, he's also a talented songwriter. He was the first member to venture into acting and variety shows extensively and later became a successful producer and CEO of his own agency, TOP Media.
the music & the iconic concept
Shinhwa's music has evolved dramatically, starting with hip-hop and bubblegum pop and transitioning into more mature, diverse sounds.
"Eusha! Eusha!": A cutesy, cheerful pop hit from 1998 that made everyone fall in love with them! It was inspired by the Beach Boys' "Sloop John B."
"T.O.P. (Twinkling Of Paradise)": A turning point song in 1999 that established their more mature, synchronized, and powerful style. The ballet-inspired choreography was iconic! (though the introduction is very questionable. like. come on.....)
"Only One": Another huge hit that cemented their hip-hop sound and showcased their powerful, masculine image."Brand New": A massive hit in 2004 that won them their first Daesang (Grand Prize), proving they were still major players even after leaving SM Entertainment.
random facts & what came next
The "Slave Contract": Shinhwa famously battled SM Entertainment in court to win the rights to their own name after their contract expired, a legal saga that lasted for years. They eventually won and established Shinhwa Company to manage themselves, a first in K-pop history!
The longest run: They are the first and only active K-pop idol group to continue performing with their original lineup for over 27 years, without any mandatory military service hiatuses stopping the group's overall existence (members served individually).
Rivalry and friendship: Though rivals with other groups like H.O.T. and Sechs Kies, they maintained a level of mutual respect, and Hye-sung even collaborated with Kangta.
anyway, that's just a little bit of the tea on Shinhwa. They're so important to K-pop history and continue to inspire new generations!
