today, we're looking into the darker side of 1st to early 3rd gen k-pop with a list of music perfect for a spooky marathon. we are talking horror, mystery, and all the eerie concepts that make this time of year so much fun!!! (note: these are very random.... i wanted to add more but i didn't want to make the post too long....)
seo taiji and boys - "classroom idea" (1994)
you want 1st gen? this is as foundational as it gets. the song itself deals with heavy themes of the rigid school system, and the live performances and general concept had a rebellious, dark edge that was revolutionary at the time(?) the aesthetic is intense and a great starting point for the original dark k-pop!!!
vixx - "voodoo doll" (2013)
let's just get the most intense one out of the way first. this mv is proper body horror, with a narrative centered around control, torture, and a literal voodoo doll. it is a raw, dark, and graphic concept that no one has really matched since. it is the staple for any k-pop halloween playlist. (omg i hear children shouting........... since when was trick-or-treating this serious........?)
exo - "mama" (2012)
hear me out........ this song would traumatise any new kpop fan........ exo's debut had a strong, epic, and slightly dark concept with a heavy, cinematic feel. the mv features mystical powers, intense atmosphere, and a dark, almost cult-like vibe in some scenes. it sets a great moody tone for your marathon. (beware of 4:40 if u get easily freaked out.... ^^;) i would like to include monster and obsession as well!
ladies' code - "hate you" (2013)
a super atmospheric video that uses the uncanny valley of dolls really well. the members are made up to look like antique, unsettling dolls with mismatched eyes, creating a truly haunting and memorable visual..... it's psychological and deeply eerie.
shinee - "married to the music" (2015)
this one is campy horror perfection! the mv embraces a b-movie aesthetic, featuring decapitations, missing eyes, and all sorts of playful yet creepy imagery at a messy wedding party(?) it is a fun, high-energy video that perfectly captures the playful spirit of halloween.
h.o.t. - "descent of warriors" (1996)
a major 1st gen hit with a strong, aggressive concept. while not horror, the performances had a powerful, almost dystopian vibe, with military-inspired outfits and a fierce energy that can fit a high-energy, intense halloween playlist. huehue.
sunny hill - "midnight circus" (2011)
sunny hill delivers a uniquely unsettling take on the classic circus theme. this isn't a happy place; it is a dark, mysterious, and slightly off-kilter performance that feels like something out of a gothic novel. the visuals are fantastic and create a perfectly strange atmosphere.
sunmi - "full moon" (2014)
sunmi nails the vampire look in this mv. it's atmospheric (I KEEP USING THAT WORD IK BUT I'M BAD AT EXPLAINING THINGS), and dark. the whole video is shot with a moody, cinematic feel, perfect for a late-night watch. it’s a great addition if you want a more mature, yet undeniably spooky, vibe for the marathon.
boyfriend - "witch" (2014)
I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS SONG!!!! this mv is all about that dark fairytale concept. it's dramatic, with a focus on a wicked witch and an elaborate storyline. it is theatrical and visually rich, making it a great addition to a spooky marathon.
g-dragon - "she's gone" (2009)
hmmm..... a deep cut that genuinely feels like a mini-thriller movie. it's a darker, more intense mv that builds a lot of suspense. gd goes for a straight horror approach here, making it a great watch for those who want a break from the more conceptual videos and just want a good old-fashioned chase scene and suspense.
tvxq! - "tri-angle" (2004, feat. boa & trax)
this is an absolute masterpiece of early sm-style cinematic concepts. it blends classical music with heavy rock and r&b, creating a dramatic, almost operatic feel. the mv has a distinct dark, visual kei-inspired look. a personal fave!
f(x) - "dracula" (audio only/live stages)
best for last!!!!!!!!! while there isn't an official music video, the song "dracula" is a fan-favorite for halloween due to its title and perfectly spooky sound. the live stages with their costumes are great visual aids for this track.
the screen goes dark, the music fades...... your halloween viewing marathon is officially set.
