tokyo girl (2008)

little thoughts on a big love across time

so. let's talk about tokyo girl (2008), or tokyo shojo if you're fancy. i just watched it and my heart is in tiny little pieces on the floor....... ㅠㅠ like, actually. someone please sweep it up for me.
it's the most extreme long-distance relationship you could possibly imagine, because the distance...... is a whole century. her phone falls through a wormhole and he picks it up in 1912. they can only talk when the moon is out. no facetimes, no bubble tea dates, no walking in the park. just two voices in the dark, talking about their day, separated by 86 years of history.

and you know from the very first minute that there is no happy ending where they run into each other's arms. there is no world where that can happen. and that's what makes it so... heavy. every word they say feels like it weighs a thousand pounds. it's just their voices, and the same moon they're both looking at. it strips everything else away and leaves just the pure, painful core of connecting with another person.

he's a writer. of course he's a writer. his name is tokujiro and he's an aspiring novelist in the meiji era, but he thinks he's a total failure. nobody gets his stories. and then he meets miho from the future, and she becomes his one and only reader. the only person who truly sees him. can you even imagine? having your work validated by someone who hasn't even been born yet? it's such a specific, intimate kind of magic.

this is the part that really got me thinking. his words—his stories—are the only thing that can physically survive the gap between them. her phone will eventually die and become a useless piece of plastic......... but his novel? that can last. his writing becomes a bridge, a time capsule, a footprint. it makes me wonder if we all need a "miho" somewhere, someday, to tell us that what we're doing matters. even if we never get to meet them :,(

so is it a tragedy? i've been staring at my ceiling about this. because yes, it makes me want to scream into a pillow. he dies without ever knowing his book would be published and loved in the future. she lives her whole life knowing she loved a ghost.

but.
he lived his life with her in his heart. she lived hers knowing someone in the past truly, deeply saw her. his love for her gave him the inspiration to write when he wanted to give up. her memory of him gave his life a legacy. it's the "better to have loved and lost" thing, but turned up so high it breaks the dial.

would his life have been better if he never found the phone? maybe it would have been simpler. quieter. but i think he would choose the phone every single time. it gave his ordinary life a sense of destiny. it gave him a muse. it gave him her.

final verdict: 4.5 out of 5 stars.

it would be a perfect 5 if my heart wasn't currently a pile of dust.... ;; it's a soft, slow, watercolor painting of a movie that someone definitely cried on. it's more than a teen romance....... it's a quiet little philosophy lesson about art, and time, and how we leave pieces of ourselves behind for people we'll never meet.

watch it if you want to feel everything and nothing at the same time!!!!! just have the tissues ready.

koi, out.
