'the day the earth stood still' (2008)

warning: spoilers ahead!!
just watched 'the day the earth stood still' (2008) for the first time, the keanu reeves remake ;], and let me tell you, it's a completely different vibe than what I expected. i was expecting something classic but modern, and instead i got a very serious keanu and lots of big special effects. the film focuses heavily on environmentalism, which is a major theme throughout.

keanu reeves plays klaatu, this very serious, almost emotionless alien who comes to earth not to warn us about war, but about how we're destroying our planet. his mission is pretty extreme: to "save the earth" by essentially wiping out humanity to let the planet heal. pretty dark stuff >:(. jennifer connelly plays helen benson, an astrobiologist who tries to convince him that humans are actually worth saving.
the film’s message is that humans are inherently destructive, and the planet would just be better off without us. this is 100% based on real life, in a way. the environmental crisis is a real and personal worry for me and i'm sure for many others. the film takes this very real, global anxiety and turns it into a massive blockbuster spectacle. the scenes with the nanobot swarm (gort, a giant robot made of tiny, self-replicating insect-like machines) devouring everything were visually impressive, but also pretty horrifying. it felt like a heavy-handed metaphor for humanity consuming everything.

my personal thoughts are that the film struggles a bit with depth. keanu's performance as an emotionless alien is consistent, but it doesn't leave much room for the audience to really connect with him :|. you don't bond with his character easily, which makes his eventual change of heart feel a bit sudden. it happens because of helen and her stepson, jacob, and their relationship, which klaatu observes as something potentially valuable: a capacity for change at the precipice.
jacob's character was a bit annoying at times, if i'm honest :\ , but i guess he served as a microcosm for human potential, the whole "at the brink we change" idea. the film presents a very bleak view of humanity, showing the military trigger-happy and a general lack of cooperation. kathy bates as the secretary of defense is all about force and control, which pushes klaatu even further towards his goal of human eradication.

final thoughts

it is a visually slick, but perhaps not very deep, modern sci-fi film. it focuses heavily on our environmental issues. the film definitely points to real-life issues with our treatment of the planet and each other. the lack of emotional depth in the characters and a heavy reliance on special effects means it doesn't quite hit the mark for me. the ending, where humanity is saved but all our technology is disabled, is a bittersweet and somewhat abrupt conclusion that leaves you thinking about the price of salvation........ it's an okay watch if you like disaster movies and environmental themes, but it lacks the subtle charm and powerful messaging of a classic. like honestly.... i wanted to see something wholesome in the end! :[
