"for few to be immortal, many must die" -- henry hamilton
hey everyone! so i also watched 'in time' (2011) for the first time, and wow, it just hit me hard :o. the whole concept is so wild yet so terrifyingly familiar. it’s a world where time is literally money, stored on your forearm, and you stop aging at 25. sounds like a dream for some, right? but it’s a nightmare for the vast majority. the rich live for centuries, while the poor struggle just to make it to the next day. this movie is a total mind-bender >:3 and i have thoughts.
the premise is genius in its simplicity. will salas (justin timberlake) is a guy from the 'dayton', the ghetto, the wrong side of the tracks, where everyone is constantly racing against the clock :\ . you see people running everywhere, all the time, because if your clock hits zero, you die, right then and there. it’s a constant, visceral stress that we don't experience quite as dramatically in our world, but the feeling of time scarcity? oh yeah, i know that feeling.

the film’s social commentary is anything but subtle, and i love that about it. it’s an allegory, plain and simple, for wealth inequality and capitalism gone into hyperdrive. the time zones are segregated, and passing from one to the next costs more time than most people even possess. this is 100% based on real life. think about it: the 1% who hoard resources, whether it's wealth, healthcare, or just plain old comfort, while the working class scrambles for scraps. it’s a system designed to keep the poor poor and the rich rich, and 'in time' puts that front and center :]. it feels personal because i see elements of that struggle in my own life and the lives of people around me. the constant grind, the anxiety about bills, the feeling that the system is rigged... it's all there in the movie. it made me feel a bit sad to be honest :( like whyyyyy must we live like this?!??!?!?
and sylvia weis (amanda seyfried), the rich girl who teams up with will... she's the perfect example of someone shielded from the real world until she steps outside her gilded cage. her journey from naive rich kid to a revolutionary is a major highlight for me. she gets it! she sees the injustice and doesn't just sit there, she acts :] love that for her.
cillian murphy as the timekeeper, raymond leon, is also fantastic (it is somewhat embarrassing to admit, but he is my favorite character... ahem). but hey! he's not entirely evil, he's just a man who's been part of the system for so long he can't see the forest for the trees......he embodies the enforcement of a brutal, unfeeling bureaucracy. but the scene where he says "i'm afraid it really is... necessary." gave me chills fr fr >:(.
anyway! the quote i mentioned in the beginning from mr. hamilton. it’s a direct mirror to how those in power justify the current state of the world(!) they see the sacrifice of the many as a necessary evil for the stability of the few.
final thoughts
this movie....... is not just a sci-fi thriller; it's a social critique dressed in a sleek, dystopian package... the metaphor of time as currency is incredibly powerful and thought-provoking. it makes you question what you value, how you spend your time, and the inherent inequalities in our own society. it definitely is based on real life, maybe not with glowing green clocks on our arms (yet! ;] pls no), but in the fundamental ways our lives..... are governed by access to resources and the structures that keep us in our 'time zones.' the movie is a bit cheesy at times, and some of the dialogue can be heavy-handed, but the core message is so important that it more than makes up for any flaws!!! it's a thrilling, fast-paced ride with a big heart and an even bigger message. this first watch has left a lasting impression on me :o.
