i don't usually talk about comebacks unless it's me complaining about yet another year with no exo song. but i got recommended suju's new comeback and didn’t think much of it at first. like yeah okay, legends doing their thing again, cool cool. i didn’t expect to actually like it tho. not in the way that’d have me spinning around my room like it’s 2009 again. okay so uh. i was trolling my sibling about liking express mode. it felt different from their usual style?? but then again, suju has always been jumbled or shuffled(?) with their concept switches, so who knows what their style even is at this point. anyway. i put the mv on the tv to mess around and be annoying and um. it started growing on me... like actually growing on me. oops. next thing i know the youtube algorithm did its thing and suddenly i’m watching suju variety clips like i’m 13 again. THEN. i saw the album. clicked it just outta curiosity. and wow. WOW. WOW. i entered a new dimension. like. this is my summer comeback album now. my new the war. sorry exo... you’ll always be in my rotation, but this summer? super junior has my heart. and listen i don’t wanna sound like i’m glazing too hard but this album... no words. like this is why i’ll never judge a comeback by the title track ever again. lesson learned. kokobop wasn’t exactly the most love-at-first-listen track either,, like it threw people off with the sounds and the edm and all that. (not me tho. i was delulu and loyal from the start.) but the b-sides on the war?? exactly. that’s what i mean. that album was a sleeper hit, and this suju one is giving me that same energy.
now let’s talk b-sides, because oh boy.
delight -- this one’s an instant serotonin boost. idk how to explain it?? it just makes me feel genuinely happy and delightful (lol) :\ it’s got that same bright joy as love&girls by snsd or beautiful world by cbx. real bouncy. real jolly. like the soundtrack to a montage of you and your friends goofing off on a summer day.
i know -- soft. sparkly. nostalgic!!!!! there’s this twinkly sound, idk if it’s a xylophone or something digital trying to be one, but it reminds me of sailor moon?? or like those old shoujo anime soundtracks that just make you feel warm inside. i could fall asleep to it and dream about being a teen in the 80s. yeah. it’s that vibe. it’s calm but not boring. dreamy but not sleepy. hehe.
haircut -- ok first of all... no idea what genre this is. futuristic??? a lil sci-fi-coded maybe? idk but it works. and i don’t usually vibe with this sound but here i am vibing. the concept is hilarious (like. imagining someone actually getting a dramatic haircut to this song). eunhyuk and yesung in the pre-chorus??? yes. and the way the whole style of the song shifts near the end??? art.
air -- this one... this one is it. this is the first song that really made me feel something. it’s freeing. it feels like flying through a gust of cold summer wind into a blue sky with no clouds. just you and the air. “only you and i in the sky” the way they say magic in the air? yeah. that. there is magic in the air fr fr.
say less -- this one is giving perfume advert. in the best way. smooth, mysterious. shindong’s part was such a nice surprise?? everyone sounds amazing here. donghae devoured. and the bridge lowkey reminded me of an nct track?? (don’t ask me which one. i just feel it.) this song is a stress reliever. instant calm.
D.N.A. -- HYPE SONG ALERT. “i wanna dance!!! i wanna play!!!” wasn’t too into it at first ngl, but now it’s stuck in my head. it gets catchier with every listen and now i’m screaming along like a maniac. certified rotation material.
finale -- okay... this one is also in the air tier for me. maybe. okay idk if i can even pick faves anymore. this album is just that good. finale gives band vibes??? like... day6 energy. (i hate comparing but i have no musical vocabulary okay.) i think it’s the drums and the guitar. and the lyrics??? “i’ll spread my wings and fly” i literally thought of one of my ocs the moment i heard it. this one’s going straight on her playlist if i ever get around to making one.
stuck with you -- the final track is calm but upbeat and comforting. it gave me “not on the map yet” feels, especially the start and second verse. i love when they sing together in the chorus!!!! and the piano part at 1:25??? it unlocked some forgotten anime op in my brain. i have no idea which one, but it was nostalgic as hell. the bridge gave that hopeful, “sunrise after a storm” kind of energy. perfect ending. the song is good. v good. n i recommend it :D
so yeah. in conclusion: don’t underestimate super junior!!!!!!!! they didn’t survive three decades in the industry just to drop a mid album in 2025. they said we are super ju~nior and meant it. super junior... you still got it. and somehow you got me too.
maybe next summer will be for exo again... but this one?
