(okay so i just watched 'love untangled'; i needed something lighthearted this weekend after a tough week).
first impressions? the nostalgia is real; set in 1998 busan, it’s all about pagers and cassette tapes. the aesthetic is super charming, honestly, which was a major selling point for me :D the story follows park se-ri, a high school student who hates her naturally curly hair; she thinks it's the only thing keeping her from her crush, the popular jock at school. her "operation love" plan is simple: straighten her hair, win his heart. (very teenage logic, like.... why?????).
then, han yun-seok, this mysterious older transfer student from seoul, shows up. he's got that quiet, cool vibe gong myung does so well; and he and se-ri immediately get entangled. naturally, a love triangle starts, which is a classic trope; but the chemistry between the leads makes it feel fresh. i really enjoyed their interactions; they made me smile a lot~!
now, onto the lessons; because i always look for those in movies:
- the film really drives home the idea that what we see as a flaw (se-ri's hair) is often the very thing someone else finds beautiful or unique. learning to love herself was her real journey, much more than landing the popular guy.
- se-ri had this whole life mapped out for the "perfect love," but genuine connection happens when you're just being yourself, not following a script. love can be pretty messy and "untangled" like the title suggests.
- vulnerability matters (even in rom-coms)!!!! both characters eventually share their burdens. their willingness to be open with each other, rather than trying to maintain a 'perfect' image, is what forms their real bond. that resonated with me.

i won't spoil the ending, but i will say it ties up in a satisfying way; it's predictable, sure, but in the best way possible. it’s a sweet, feel-good watch that delivers exactly what it promises: a charming, nostalgic, easy-to-digest romance with a heartwarming message. a great film for a cozy night in~♥︎ (note: the ending was waaaaay better than 20th century girl.)
rating: 8.5/10 (charming and sweet; but the heavy subplot felt a bit out of place for such a light movie; still a solid watch)
