okay, so i have to give it up for the original ppl who brought the hype to the kpop scene wayyyy back in the day: NRG! for those who think kpop started yesterday, y'all are missing out on the group that seriously paved the way... (okay i hate when ppl say that but still... ahem!!) nrg, which stands for New Radiancy Group, debuted in 1997 with a kewl concept that was just SO ahead of its time. they mixed insane dance moves, eurobeat, and electronic music in a way that just made you wanna DANCE! >:D i'm here to give you the full deets on why they're the ultimate legends MWOHAHAHAHA!!!

Fan Club: 천재일우 (cheonjae ilwoo) The name is actually so touching...it means "a once-in-a-thousand-year opportunity." I feel like their fans really were that special to them, right?! it makes me emotional thinking about it...
Fan Color: Pink [raincoats & balloons] Squeeee~~PINK!! it's such a sweet color, perfect for their image. I can only imagine how beautiful their concerts were, filled with a sea of pink raincoats and balloons. my heart!

lee sung-jin
the leader and main vocalist who could belt out any note! he was always such a charismatic cutie and kept the group together through thick and thin!
chun myung-hoon
the lead rapper, dancer, and a legit songwriting genius! he literally composed their hit song "hit song" (aka my fave nrg song) and was the one behind a lot of their unique sound! plus, he was hilarious in variety shows!
noh yoo-min
the maknae and lead dancer! his visual power was no joke and his cute charms made everyone fall in love! he also had some seriously killer yoyo skills???
moon sung-hoon
the main rapper and acrobatics expert! he brought the high-flying stunts to their choreo that rivaled some of the best gymnasts! talk about talent!
kim hwan-sung
the sweetest sub-vocalist with a heart of gold. his passing in 2000 from a viral infection at just 19 years old is still so so sad. his memory lives on in their music and in the hearts of fans..... sigh TT
the music & the iconic concept
nrg's music was pure fire! they weren't like the other groups back then who just did bubblegum pop. nrg brought a different flavor that blended high-energy dance with eurobeat and electronic music, which was super fresh for the time.
"i can do it" (할 수 있어): their debut single from 1997 is a TOTAL bop! it's the ultimate pump-up anthem and a song that deserves way more love!
"messenger": a high-energy dance track from their second album race. this song is so intense and showed off their powerful performance skills!
"sorrow" (비): the emotional ballad written for the late hwan-sung. it's a real tearjerker and a perfect tribute to their beloved member.
"hit song" (힛트송): this song literally won them their first music show award! with its catchy chorus and insane dance break, it's easy to see why!
random facts & what came next
· Chinese Hallyu Pioneers: NRG was one of the FIRST K-Pop groups to gain a huge fanbase in China! They were super popular there and helped pave the way for other groups to promote overseas. True trailblazers!
· The Comebacks: After Hwan-sung's passing, the group went through some line-up changes and hiatuses, but they always kept fighting! They even reunited in 2017 to celebrate their 20th anniversary, proving that their bond is forever! ^^
· Friendly Rivalry: The H.O.T. members actually considered NRG their main rivals, not Sechskies, mostly because of NRG's crazy acrobatics and next-level dance skills!
· From Dancers to Idols: Did you know that Sung-jin and Myung-hoon originally debuted as a dance-pop duo called Hamohamo?? And Sung-hoon and Yoo-min were their backup dancers! So they all knew each other even before NRG formed!
anyway, nrg is a group that truly deserves so much more recognition for their music and their history. they were real trailblazers!
